Other than size of payload why go JSON?

That alone is a good reason, but simplicity on the client-side is the
other. Also, I don't see JSON used as much were standards matter. We use
JSON extensively in Ajax requests where it's our client code talking to
our server code so the only "standard" that matters is ours. :)
