Joe's allegation puzzled me too. Learning HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and
the DOM has worked to my advantage, so I encourage people to learn it.
Some years ago I was paired with an HTML guru and we divided the work
between us. He wrote HTML while I wrote RPG and the relationship worked
well.
Most of my Web applications are adaptations of existing models and if
that's the type of development you're doing, then you might only need a
cursory understanding of browser technologies. And there are a number
of tools that generate RPG, HTML, and JavaScript based on models. And
there are a number of AJAX toolkits that shield developers from the DOM.
But there will be times when knowing browser technologies will work to
your advantage.
