Because there is no way we know of to get the same functionality without an ActiveX control - OK a signed Java applet can do it, I'm told by my colleague across the aisle - but this is what I've been given and so have to work with it. It is necessary to work with the local file system and javascript can't do that on its own. Right?

If you have an alternate code path that is cross-browser compatible
then why on earth are you bothering with IE-specific stuff?
Especially something as horrible as ActiveX? (OK, WinDOS-specific
stuff since other browsers can use ActiveX but it's still horrible.)
