The new JVMs are considerably faster - so one should not give this advice, unless applied to an earlier release.

Be aware that Java is s-l-o-w on the AS/400 with the classic JVM (I have
not yet experimented with the j9 one). Performance will most likely be
better with a PC in front, but if you write your programs using only the
IBM Java Toolbox your programs will run in both places.
