because you have redundancy for multiple servers? why is that easier / better than redundancy for one server?
I understand that vmware has a solution where the virtual machine can be moved to another physical host without being shut down. I.e. it is possible to maintain physical hardware without downtime.

Pretty nifty.

We are seeing this getting more widespread use as "cloud computing". You have "something" which runs your stuff, but you have no idea of where and why. It might provide a "x86 machine" or an execution environment like "java web application server", but you do not know what is outside.
