I cannot recall if the Tomcat 6 can serialize idle sessions to disk to 
reclaim memory, but I am sure that from Tomcat 5 (and perhaps even 
earlier) it is possible to maintain sessions over a container restart by 
serializing them "somewhere" before going down, and restoring them on 
the way up.  That is very nice when developing.

I don't think JDBC connections are serializable, (hence "transient") so 
the code should be able to get a fresh one in case the session object 
"suddenly" went null.
