I have the user log in with their i5 user id/password with a PHP script.

<snip>

But in this case, the user logged in on a previous php page which, since
this is basically all stateless, the iSeries and the PHP server know
nothing about.

<snip>

OK, you lost me there. If the user logged in, how does the server know the user is logged in if you have not stored anything? In other words, it's common practice to store the information in session variables for later retrieval.

Are they logging into one server and processing pages (running programs) on another? That might complicate it, otherwise it should be pretty simple.

I use a generic connection or no username/password on the i5 connection, so I haven't hit your exact requirement, but I did something similar in Mantis. I am actually using Windows AD for authentication, but Mantis requires an account to exist (be set up) anyway. I hacked in a function to create the account, providing the AD authentication of the user to retrieve their information (mainly email address and name). Granted, Mantis has lots of functions and session storage making things really easy.
