In Freemarker (actually through Niggle that uses Freemarker) the final step before a page is sent to the web server is to create the page in memory and then there is a page.expose method that sends the output to the web server. There are other methods that allow that content to be sent to a pdf writer (response.getOutStream is used I think). Anyway, I am not familiar with the internals, I just know it is pretty easy to change the output method once the template and the data have been merged in memory but before it is sent "out" to wherever.

But if you are creating the HTML with RPG then I am unfamiliar with the
mechanisms you have available to redirect the output stream. Perhaps not
so easy in RPG?

I'm not sure what you mean by redirect the output stream. I don't have any concerns about streaming HTML to browser or IFS or both. That's easy. But I'm not aware of a way to stream HTML to PDF and do the necessary formatting conversions, using RPG, if that's what you mean. That's what I'm interested in the most.

RJS offers an RPG toolkit to generate PDF formatted streams from RPG, but I'd prefer to use HTML templates for formatting output streams - then convert from HTML to PDF.
