Lucene is available as a PHP port and documented in Zend Framework http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.search.lucene.html . But if you insist on using Java, the PHP Java Bridge is now a part of Zend Server CE and facilitates access to java classes as PHP objects, etc.
