Feeding and cooling the hardware was not part of the amount mentioned in the article. That was just the starting fee.



(And please note I am not advocating against the IBM i. My point is just that it is cheaper to be able to scale horizontally with commodity hardware than needing to scale vertically with high-end hardware)

Actually, I've considered if Terracotta could be useful to add cpu-power semi-transparently to a JVM running on the IBM i without going full Java EE.
