I saw IWS/IAS written in a few places, so I probably started crossing Acronyms which is easily done.

Interestingly the Apache config pages refer to the "Integrated Web Application Server" which could easily get shortened to IAS or IWS or IAS/IWS :-)
In any case Tomcat still looks better as a more mainstream approach because it doesn't need the Web Application Bundles.
FWIW: If I were in the IBM system group I would have simply adopted the current Apache Tomcat versions and made them PTF-less like they are already.
Tomcat smokes on the iSeries with the 32-bit JVM running. I would dare say ALMOST as fast as a PC...........

I don't do much Java -- and don't have a useful opinion for you. But, I wanted to interject something: You may be using the wrong term.
IWS is the Integrated Web Services Server which is designed to make it easy to write SOAP web services with ILE HLLs. It isn't a Java
application server, but it _does_ run on one. The one that it runs on
is called the "Integrated Application Server" (IAS) and is included with the OS.
So although you asked about the IWS as an alternative to Tomcat, I think you really meant the IAS.
And, again, I don't have an opinion, I just wanted to try to clarify the point in hopes that with a clearer question, you'll get better answers.
