I guess it is a toss up between one slightly longer request to get the whole structure in one JSON or several individual xmlhttprequests requests to get the child json data on demand. Certainly if the application is such that the user is only likely to make one or two selections then I agree with you Bryce - it is a bit wasteful to get one great big JSON containing data that the user will never need to see. On the other hand, if the data set is small, it would be a bit OTT to make an xmlHttpRequest every time the parent dropdown list selection changes.

Instead of pulling all the data at once I would suggest a series of Ajax
calls. So when someone chooses Ford from the first drop down you issue a
request to the database for all Ford models. If they choose another
manufacturer then go get those and replace the ones that were there with
the new ones. This is a very easy and straight forward approach to take
and execute.

Hi Mike,

Does ASP/.net provide a reusable component to handle this "parent/child"
drop down list challenge or do you have to code for each occurance?
This "parent/child" pattern is common in a lot of business apps we run
into. (IE Select a car mfg such as Ford or GM, then based on the
parent, show the models (F150, Explorer)

Thanks, Paul

The
problem with Kevin's solution is that the IDs will not be sequential or
they
can change.

From there these are the two lines that work:

var i = findIndexByKeyValue(jsonRequestType, "Id", key);
$.each(jsonRequestType[i].HourTypeCodes, function(i, item) {
