Argh. 20 seats is indeed a hardy chunk of change. I really don't get why there is an upcharge - you should be able to choose either ADTS or RDPi, but IBM just doesn't seem to see it that way. The other thing is that I have been getting conflicting stories on the SWMA. I have yet to get a definitive answer on the issue, but at least one person on the list has said they specifically were charged additional SWMA for RDPi that they would not have been charged for the equivalent ADTS seats. You know me, I am an ardent believer in the tooling, but that sort of nickel and dime mentality from IBM is just horrible.

Let me choose between RDPi and ADTS and if I choose RDPi make sure the maintenance goes to Rational. Then, if the tooling is good enough, I may spend a little more for an upcharge to go to RDi-SOA.

Another option would be to contract with someone with plug-in skills (like David, if he were free-lancing <grin>) to put together a small package of upgrades that advance the tool. Things like extended table views and additional search support (e.g., COPY and PRINT) and a better compare/merge. Sell those for a small uptick and distribute a percentage to the author.

Hi Joe

Speed improvements are definitely something we need to think about I guess. The trouble is it looks like we will need to keep WSDc 7.0 in order to continue to use Adobe Flex. RDi didn't seem to have any decent javascript editor installed with it either, but of course I can get around that by adding the Aptana plug-in. But with over 20 developer licences to consider, $800 per developer is quite a lump to shell out when you have to keep version 7.0 anyway.

By the way, if the WSDC list is down to about 80 per month then yes, it seems it has calmed down since my last sortie.

Thanks for the feedback

Kevin

It's of course a personal decision, but for me RDPi V8 is SO much faster
for everything that it's just a no-brainer. Loading is much faster, and
so is general source navigation. For example, lists of objects (library
list, member list, etc.) come up much faster in V8.

The Screen Designer is an obvious additional benefit, unless you don't
do WYSIWYG green screen design.

Yes, WDSC is free. So I guess it depends on how much you value your own
time. I know that I save at least an hour or two a week just by the
speed of the tool. That adds up to $800 real quick.

Yes, having played with it all for a day or so it seems that migrating to V8 would just be a waste of time and money.

Thanks for the helpful response.

Kevin,

Not that I know of, however as you have noted 7.0, 7.5, 7.6 and 8.0 all look pretty much the same so if 7.0 is doing it for you, there's probably no reason to switch.

subject: [WEB400] RDi V8 as a plug-in

I know there are more specific forums for questions like this, but does anyone know if it is possible to add RDi V8 as a plugin to an existing Eclipse installation?

I have installed RDi to see if it has any benefits over WDSc 7.0. I have the latter added to an existing Eclipse instance that already has some other things we used installed (like Adobe Flex for example), but I cannot see any way of doing the same with RDi. I cannot seem to add Flex plug-in to the RDi installation either, so it looks like if I want to use RDi I still have to keep my other Eclipse 3.x installation at the same time.

At the moment, I cannot see any justification for paying $800 for an RDi licence because it is not giving me anything (that I need) over and above WSDc 7.0
