Just what I didn't need, yet another way of skinning a cat! I'm being
offered too much choice.

What exactly is this? It looks like a way of encapsulating Drupal, so
that you don't actually install anything on your own computer. It
seems that if you want to create something good though, you will still
need to understand Drupal. What happens if DrupalGardens disappears
one day, does my site go with it?

I was just looking at microsoft Webmatrix ( thanks to Steve R). I
haven't tried pushing the publish button yet. I wonder if I could
create the site as quick as Drupal Gardens as I could also use Drupal
with WebMatrix but have full control over the site. (until ms starts
charging for webmatrix :-( )

Take a look at Drupal Gardens (www.drupalgardens.com). It uses (surprise!) Drupal as the foundation and lets you build sites for free.
