Just as a follow-up for the archives.

The problem was that I was so concerned that I did not understand the whole DCM thing that when I had a authentication failure I assumed it meant the certs were the problem.

But Scott K. pointed out to me that I was using curl from PHP and that that doesn't involve the IBM DCM at all - who knew! Well - Scott obviously and probably several other people here - but I didn't.

So basically I was asking the wrong question.

Scott knew that authentication failures are usually caused by Id/PW problems - sure enough a space had crept into the password field. Duh.

Anyway - now having a working (in test mode anyway) credit card app and know a lot more about how it all hangs together than I did (or indeed wanted to!)

Many thanks to all who tried to help me out. I will be collecting the provided knowledge and one day may even try to come up with a check list that helps idiots like me to determine just what they want and when.
