Good question. Thank you for asking it. Here is my reasoning, good or bad:

The target audience for this project is the ordinary RPG programmer who wants to try all this stuff out. Gaining a base understanding of what is going on seems to me to be an underlying first need. Injecting useful but deflecting issues like needing to learn other languages is, in my opinion, a downer for the target audience.

Once s/he has gained some comfort then that is a good time to go off into the many great and varied solutions.

But at first, to get one's feet wet, I would like to keep it as simple as possible.

The other reason I want to do it this way is that I am not expert enough to be offering anymore than the most basic stuff. Once it gets past simple then I am likely to mess up.

Booth,

Why limit yourself to RPG? There are multiple, well supported, free
options. Just see the periodic 'best language' conversations on this list.

First, this is a very simplistic request. I admit to being flummoxed as
to how to get started.

Then some background: I want to stay within the confines of what IBM
provides with the base midrange package. I know there a lot of various
third party tools, but I want to stay with the solutions provided by
IBM. My reasoning is simple: I want a solution that any RPG programmer
can build, on his machine, without having to talk his bosses into
spending more money for extras.

Where I am at: I have built a web site on the Apache server where I can
serve up static reports generated in RPG and then published as HTML in
the IFS. Here is a screen shot.

What I believe is the next baby step: I would like to add a flavor to
the physical file from a web page. Perhaps edit/delete, too, if that is
a small step. But I do not understand the process very well. In the
end I want to have the ability to add an image for the flavor, too.

Any comments are welcome. I am hoping I can make the Ice Cream Project
as a beginners guide for RPG programmers. "Keep it Simple" is the key
phrase.

Thank you.
