The biggest disadvantage to using the toolkit is that you are locking yourself with code that is specific to the i. Your database may never change (and we all hope it doesn't) but it will be a big task retro-fitting all your DB access to use standard SQL should you ever need to change.
You'll also have a smaller group to ask should issues arise. You're much more likely to find answers to questions about standard SQL than the PHP toolkit.
