To answer your question...
If you have a SERVICE PROGRAM that returns a value, you can create a
SQL UDF to call that service program procedure and have it returned.

Michael,
If you are validating against data on the i, couldn't you have
a drop down list of possible values? So if you are validating
invoice type or store, then you just allow drop down lists with
the valid entries that way the user can only select valid values?
If you list is large, you could use a type ahead approach as
Expectations.
