And the toolkit can call a service program directly. Examples in the
Samples directory of Zend Server.

Which can then be used in the SELECT clause to return a value or use it
to eliminate certain records.

Michael,

Sounds like you are having way too much fun...

To answer your question...

If you have a SERVICE PROGRAM that returns a value, you can create a
SQL UDF to call that service program procedure and have it returned.

Yes, you can use parameterized statements with a UDF.

And Todd...if you're using a UDF that requires parameters, do you
treat it like an SP with prepare, param, and execute?

Stored procedures are used for validation. These are usually
external SQL stored procedures wrapped around a CL or RPG program.
A UDF can be very useful when directly invoking an SQL select or
update statement.

Good point Todd. Do you use UDFs for validation, or Stored
Procedures?

The drop-down list of available values works fine on a

something to consider. I always try to think of all the ways a
"back-end" process can be called.
You generally don't want to rely on "front-end" validation.

Thanks,
Todd

Good idea Paul, and one I'll implement. Still unclear on how to
do validation against information that's dynamic.

I want to be able to use an SQL UDF from PHP, Seems like I need
to use the same method as using an SQL Stored Procedure. If
that's the case, the value of a function seems to be less than
expected.

Michael,

If you are validating against data on the i, couldn't you have
a drop down list of possible values? So if you are validating
invoice type or store, then you just allow drop down lists with
the valid entries that way the user can only select valid values?

If you list is large, you could use a type ahead approach as
well.

THanks, Paul

What's a good way to do simple validation against data
contained on the i from a PHP program? I'd rather not invest
in having to prepare, param,
and
execute a stored procedure when all I need is a simple true
or false. I have functions (implemented as procedures in a
service
program) that returns what I want, but I'm having trouble
executing that function from PHP. I don't have a problem with
a stored procedure that returns values
or
a stored procedure that returns a result set.

Is there something special/different about functions?

Thanks!
