Hi Rob,
My last experience with WAS was in the WAS 4 era; your experience is
like a flashback for me. I had a very similar experience with very long
response times to the point of throwing odd errors that eventually were
traced back to timeouts of various sorts. The whole situation had two
root causes:

1) An antique AS/400 (yes, AS/400) with a slow CPU.
2) A very memory constrained subsystem.

If you're running a fractional LPAR, maybe you can kick up the processor
and memory for a bit to see if you can get acceptable response times.

By and large, the universe - even our midrange universe - is moving away
from green screen, toward a GUI-only place. If the GUI isn't
acceptable, we really need to let IBM know so, they can address it.
Maybe the answer is an API we can call from an RPG or Java program.
