I think you could take this a step further... combining the download idea with this idea.
<a href="filename.jpg"><img src="filename.jpg" /></a>
The image would be displayed as you wanted, and if clicked, it is downloaded, and the user can chose how to open it from their browser. Does this achieve what you are looking for?
