I think we might be talking about different things Nathan but, that aside, do you prefer your method having looked at "promises" and rejected the idea?

I prefer to "queue" requests which perform asynchronous I/O and register callbacks by using an Array.push(), paired with a "generic" call-back routine which removes the "top" request from the queue by using Array.slice(1). If the Array.length is greater than 0, then the next "request" is executed. This effectively makes otherwise asynchronous I/O requests - "synchronous".
