Sometime after v5r4, I think as early as v6.1, but certainly by v7.1, IBM added the capability to load the operating system using virtual tape. This allows you to reload without having to touch the system. I never did it, but when they added virtual tape and virtual optical to the box around v5r4, I used that to install PTF's and licensed programs on remote boxes. The promise was that remote system load was on the way using the same mechanism. You might want to check into that on the midrange-l list.
