In my testing, it's been almost instantaneous but I understand your concern.

Always open to suggestions. Assume I'd need to contract with an SMS gateway service to send direct texts?

As I replied to Aaron.... baby steps and, it's a side project.

Remember I said emails to vtext.com do not get the same importance from
Verizon that real text messages get. We've seen delays before.
