If CGI works, why not create some RPG CGI service calls that return JSON or XML data and then wrap them with a .Net business object.
I also have written a wrapper for XMLSERVICE which works using XMLCGI which is a CGI app.
You can also use the Client Access drivers to access data on IBMi from a .Net service. You can create your own ASP.Net REST or SOAP service pretty easily.
Lots of options depending on your skill levels and team skillsets.

We're a DIY shop and most of our apps are 5250, with about 10 CGIDEV2 apps. Windows apps interact via DB2 stored procedure calls.
We want to transition the Windows server apps to web service calls. I'm using CGI right now but am open-minded.
