Though, as Nadir said, you don't have to worry about the XML or JSON payload because Integrated Web Services (IWS) handles it for you. IWS brings together a set of tools to hide some of the complexity of web services from developers. But the complexity is still there under the covers.
We don't use IWS, but it sounds like a useful toolset. I do know IBM has released a pretty extensive IWS server administrator and programmer guide.
