FWIW...I wrote a chat app using both node.js and RPG.  You'll find it here: https://github.com/phelgren/rpg-node

I know that you didn't have a 5250<->node chat requirement, but it might spark some additional ideas.  It's based on the early versions of OPS (4 years ago) .  You'll probably want to implement Node using more recent install instructions.

It's normally on it's own port.

If you use 3rd party plugin then it's no worry and no config on your end.

one thing I do not understand is would the chat server interfere with the
PHP web server? I have HTTPS to a public facing static IP address. port
443. If the chat server is a standalone thing, is it on the same IP but
just a different port? Doesn't apache control all the ports on the static
IP?

You should be able to use anything you want, but node would be easiest if
you want to roll your own.

I would actually suggest looking for a canned solution out there, though.
There are many to choose from that I bet you can just insert into your
web
page with a simple copy and paste of some JS code. That would work on
any
site and you don't need to worry about the back end.

on the client side that means using the WebSocket class? On the server
side
do I have to use node.js? Does the PHP Zend server support websockets?
