Virtual hosts were the key. I had overlooked the fact that my test server uses non-standard ports. For that reason, I have to specify a different port for HTTPS. The virtual host had been created automatically and HTTPS worked fine once I specified the correct port. Thank you

Have tried setting up 2 virtual hosts, one on port 80 (http) and one on port 443 (https and set up for SSL)?
Sometimes wizards aren't the best way to accomplish what you what.
