What technologies are predominantly in use near where you live? In
Milwaukee where I am, it's a Microsoft town, so if I left the platform, I'd
have to learn .Net and Windows administration. (yuck, but that's what the
job market demands around here)
Presuming you know SQL already along with your IBM i skills:
If it's .Net, then learn Visual Studio and one of those languages, with C#
being my first choice since it's as close to Java as you can get without
being Java.
If it's open source stuff, then HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and pick one of the
list of options. Ruby, Node.js, python are all good choices, but it really
depends on what's being asked for in the job market.
In the end, if you are a developer, the language becomes another syntax, the
OS is another set of commands to learn, and the development environment will
be one of a couple of IDEs. It may be heresy on this list to suggest this
but in the end we all have to do what's right for us.

That IS the question. Currently, there are no advertised IBM i jobs
available within a reasonable driving distance from my home. Relocation
would be extremely difficult due to other obligations. I'd like to stay in
the IBM i area, it's given me a good life thus far. Due to the way in which
we're being shutdown, there is the possibility of retraining. I have a
number of options available and a little bit of time to figure it out. If
anyone else has been through something similar, I'd love to know what you
did.
