The toolkit and ODBC can be used to access IBM i resources allowing the PHP and Apache to be on any platform.

Many of us, myself included, run Apache and PHP on the IBM i - which is probably more efficient.

The IBM i version of Apache is "hardened" by IBM and has additional directive options to facilitate security etc.

If you management are concerned about openoiingh the box up to the world you can simply use a proxy between the IBM i and the real world - which would still allow high speed access from within the organization.
