Chad,

We just finished our annual Disaster Recovery Testing at IBM. We were
able to restore the entire primary Domino iSeries system in 10 hours from
our backups. We have over 800 GB of data on each side of the iSeries
Domino Cluster. The only thing we needed to configure after a full
system restore was the ethernet lines. I was in and out of IBM in one
day, with spare time to play 9 holes of Golf. :)

We run a large Cluster of Domino Servers and we use BRMS to Backup the
Domino Databases.
Our main iSeries hosting Domino is backup up fully weekly, using the BRMS
version of Option 21.
We do our daily backups on the secondary iSeries, for the domino
databases only and I run the exclusions list weekly as well so we have all
of the files
such as the notes.ini . We can restore the secondary from our daily but
is requires additional configuration which I try to avoid.

Domino Transactional Logs are running in Circular mode and use BRMS save
while active feature with the Domino APIs,
so there is no downtime on the secondary iSeries system for Domino.

In fact we can run the BRMS jobs during the day and have it set to do 100
databases concurrently.

We now use BRMS for everything. It creates great reports, and makes it
easy for us to "show" the business how we can easily restore the systems.

I would recommend BRMS to anyone looking for a more reliable way to
automate backup and recovery. No more writing CL programs that can easily
and restores are a breeze as well.

Regards,

Sean

subject: Cluster backup ideas

We are running a cluster with 2 Domino servers on 2 separate AS/400s. One
Domino server is our 'main' server and is used for mail and a few apps.
The other Domino server is our 'backup' server and is left as restricted
to
the users unless we are switched to it on a monthly test, etc. All mail
and application databases are replicated in the cluster. Configuration
changes for the servers are VERY rare.

Our current backup strategy is:

-Both AS/400s are saved with an Option 21 full system backup once per
month

-The main Domino server is shut down each night and saved with a SAV
command against the entire IFS (we check the results and are only missing
some Websphere logs, etc. In other words, Domino is getting saved fully).

-The backup Domino server runs continually and is not backed up on a daily
basis.

Now that we're up and running well on this cluster and switchovers are
working well, I want to verify that this scenario should work well enough.
We are very comfortable with being able to restore the main Domino server
from the nightly backup. We are thinking that we would restore the backup
Domino server from the monthly Option 21 and let the cluster get things
repopulated in the backup Domino server's databases.

Is this a valid strategy?

That sounds pretty good, though it may be better to restore from the
nightly IFS saves (IMHO).

Just also wondering if you have run the Cluster Analysis tool?

Agreed, but the backup server isn't getting the IFS saved nighly.

Refresh me on what the cluster analysis tool does... I think I ran it when
setting things up initially...

I was thinking you could restore what you needed to the backup from the
primary that's saved nightly.

The analysis tools checks for replica existence, consistent ACL, etc...

Gotcha... restore the DBs to the backup server from the main server's save
(same replica ids), right? That would be another option, I guess...

When we do a monthly test, we leave the main server down for a day and
generally see things replicate back pretty quickly... I just want make
sure
this would hold true after a restore from an earlier backup.
