D'oh! Arcticsystem is the network name of our iSeries. systemName is a class property that we use to pass in which iSeries we want to access: AS400 system = new AS400(systemName, myprofile, mypassword); I should have used the reference to the AS400 object (i.e., system) rather than the property holding the name of the system (i.e., systemName).
