   Thanks for you help. I think you've steered me in the right direction. I
   don't believe that BIRT can be configured to run without Swing. I might
   have to look into running NAWT with full GUI support.

   Apparently BIRT is configured to talk to a SwingDisplayServer which
   again in turn brings up the Sun X11 AWT-implementation which fails on
   OS/400.

   If you cannot make the WebSphere run without access to a GUI (check the
   topic "Run on a host without GUI" in
   http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/index.jsp, and
   search also for "headless" to find the solution that works best for
   you), then you may have to see if BIRT can be reconfigured to work
   without access to Swing.
