Can you tell me what a BDE is?

I did a search for "BDE" and got back Banco de Espana and Borland Database 
Engine. Neither of which seems to fit what you're talking about.

Are you sure you want to use 5250 emulation for this? Wouldn't it make a 
lot more sense to have a separate application on the Linux box that sends 
data from connected devices to the iSeries, and receives sound files to 
play, etc?

If you modified TN5250 to do this, you'd have an application that would 
only work with a customized version of one emulator. That would both 
prevent you from updating TN5250 to get bug fixes, and from ever switching 
to a different emulator.

Since I don't know what a BDE is or what types of attached devices you 
need to access, it's hard to answer these questions.
