As Doug said - lots of issues.  Over the years we've dealt with them in a 
number of ways. 
 The thing you need to be concerned about is primarily the cost currency. 
When you install a MAPICS environment it ask you for the primary 
environment currency - read COST.  No currency conversion goes on - IFM or 
not - of costs.  So, for example, if you transfer inventory from one 
warehouse to another (US to France) XA assumes that the cost is in the 
primary environment currency. 
Another issue is the language of the data.  If you share items the item 
descriptions may need to be in the local language.  Even with EPDM and 
item revisions there are still a few things that are not enabled and go 
back to use the released site (item master).  All other data language 
needs to be considered. 
You will notice that most of the files that contain cost have a user field 
for currency ID.  We got MAPICS to add that for our customer way back 
about 10 years ago.  We had 32 sites all around the world that were 
sharing one environment.  The only reason we had a different environment 
was if we needed a different AS/400 because of poor telecommunications 
infrastructure in the country. 
The Shared Environment solution is a good one.  We used the predecessor to 
that with Terry Borgert at Progressive Systems help.

need to create a new company for a new subsidiary in France (quickly of
course). I am wondering if it would make more sense to add a new company
to our existing primary environment as compared to creating a new
environment. All items exist in the primary environment and then get
created as they are needed into the subsidiaries. This has been
automated to a point but has led to many a problem over the past couple
of years. 
Any thoughts, suggestions, warnings.... would be greatly appreciated.

There are several issues that come to play when adding a new company with 
a different currency than that of the "local currency".
Will this company have item master costs? If so they will be in the local 
currency which will cause issues. Production records will be in the local 
currency. CAS security is an issue.
 
Watermark has a solution which may assist in this process. It is called 
Shared Applications. If you would like additonal information on this, let

I'm with Pete O. on this one.  I think you would find it a lot cleaner to 
have a separate environment (sharing the AMALIBx).  Simpler on security, 
and all around easier to manage.   And you already know how to manage 
multiple environments.  At my prior employer, for a couple years we added 
a product line that was run separate from the rest of the company (that 
area ran as a demand-flow shop, unlike the rest of the plant), and it was 
a lot easier to keep things separate with two separate environments.  It 
was easier for the accounting function also.
We looked hard at setting up a separate company, but decided it would be 
harder with all the reporting changes and all - the hundreds of queries 
and such were all done assuming company 01.  We didn't want to have to 
deal with all that - separate data libraries were easier to manage.

Our company Buehler Ltd is on R5.5 and have all the features of IFM
modules installed and Running perfect for us (except some user issues ;)
We also using Shared Apps, where all Master files are shared and
transactional data are silos.  Shared apps is not a quick solution (not
easy to install, but PSI could help you out with that)  - but down road
it will bring a lot of benefits. I agree, for this particular task and
time constrains it would be cleaner to create a new environment,
specifically if it requires to have various securities and currencies.
