Opps !!

        I must be very tired !  The answer to my own question is in the
 question..

                main(int argc, char argv[])  is seting up pointers to the
 start of the arguments (parameters) being passed into the code. So by 
 grabing the address instead of the value I can then return any value I 
 need to the address pointed at by the rcvjrne call to the exit program.

        I was therfore able to do this.

        char *ctlByte;
        ctlByte = (char *) agrv[2];

        and then 

        *ctlByte = '9';
