As near as I could tell, what happens is that the last 8 days of spool entries are kept. New entries drop into the slots of old, empty entries. An old entry seems to be empty if printed and not saved, but the space on dasd remains the same. Therefore, the size of the area always ratchets up if needed, but never ratchets back down. My conclusion was that at some time in the past a few run-away queries or something had blown this up to huge proportions (we had literally thousands of empty entries).
