David,

In a message dated 97-06-06 04:17:15 EDT, you write:

And man, doesn't THAT byte the big one! CPP's are USUALLY CL programs, but
if you want to allow multiple entries for a single parameter you have to use
a 3GL to handle the binary parameters. I ask again -- why has IBM invested
so much time and energy in its other languages, but NONE in CL? Command
language has the potential to be the preeminent "language of choice"
(especially in data warehousing applications) if it would only recognize all
data types, allow subroutines, and allow more than one file to be declared.

I recently wrote a command to back up files based upon the references of
program names passed and whether or not they were open for output or update.
While I admit my CL skills had dropped off a bit due to the frequent use of
AS/Set, this would have been immaterial had CL supported all data types. I
eventually ended up reorganizing the whole thing to where the RPG was the
primary CPP and the CL secondary (you also cannot specify multiple
objects/libraries on a SAV in CL). I think that IBM is "missing the boat" on
its easiest to code and learn language...
