I don't know that I could recommend any ONE book for all of the areas that
you mention.  Certainly "Inside the AS/400" is good for understanding the
architecture, and any of Cozzi's "The Modern RPG Language" books are good for
the obvious subject (I oughta get a commission on the latter sold to my
customers ;-)).  Given the nebulous nature of AS/400 programming these days,
I find it difficult if not impossible to recommend something that does both.
 The ambiguity is only further compounded by the new RISC systems, and those
soon to be announced.

When I first "came home" to IBM, I found TSS to be quite helpful in the areas
of both security and multi-member files -- both subjects difficult for
non-/38 personnel to grasp.  Unfortunately, I found TSS to be quite
sophomoric on most other subjects.  Cozzi's books filter the "RPG User's
Guide" and "Reference" into a form understandable by those of us that learned
on the S/3, but I have no point of reference to grade them by for new AS/400
users.

If I were to offer one and only one book, it would be one that most users
don't have.  It may not even be published by IBM anymore.  When I was with an
Agent firm, we had a "Quick Start" guide for installing new systems, of which
even IBM employees were often not familiar.  It was "chock full" of
installation instructions and references to other IBM books.  Not
programming, but certainly a primer for the system itself...
