Dan,

I would recommend always using date type fields.  Some day you will 
want to access the data from a speadsheet or some other desktop tool 
via ODBC or JDBC.  Life is much easier if you have used date type 
fields, especially if you provide end user query via the desktop 
tools.  Also remember that RPG IV provides date arithmetic.  My $.02.

We're embarking on some database design issues and I wanted to know 
how
others felt about the use of date type fields versus just numeric 
type
fields (format would be CCYYMMDD).

What overhead (if any) would there be to convert numeric fields to 
date
type fields to do certain date interval calculations?

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
