I've done it, but it's not pretty. According to my recollection, you need to use Alt Esc U (three separate keystrokes) for roll up, Alt Esc D for roll down, Alt Esc R for reset, Alt Esc A for attention, to name a few. Depending on the modem on the other end, you may have to lock the baud rate to match it, and you might need to suppress error correction and/or compression. She's right.
