Thanks for responding. I got it to work! I found a sample in the
redbook GG24-4378-00 "LAN Server/400: A Guide to Using the AS/400 as a
File Server". In their example, they use an AS/400 code page of 37, and
a stream file code page of 850, both hard-coded.
I'll do some more reading and find out the pros/cons of their method vs
yours of using the QASCII.TBL.
What's really flaky (IMO) is having to place the data in a program
described file first. I understand the ramifications of packed data,
but as long as I avoid troublesome data types, I don't see the purpose
on not allowing externally described files.
