Hello Bill,
I think you are looking for a multi-format logical file (something like a S36
file where you got a Header, Detail etc etc in same file).  I think you may also
need what is called a format-selector program attached to the created logical
view to this file.  Much more information could be attained by you by visiting
the IBM AS400 site and look in the reference section for the Softcopy manuals.
Look for DDS manuals mainly this one:
AS/400 DB2 for OS/400 Database Programming
