>> Does this mean that 400 has some extremely weak mathematical processing, or >> is it just the compiler that is badly written? Neither - I have never encountered a computer that can multiply as fast as it can move data. Think about the amounts of work involved. Multiply is about the slowest thing _any_ computer can do outside of I/O. The AS/400's exception messaging system also adds to the overhead. All told it's a very bad technique to use for many reasons. I wish we'd made the RPG IV compiler recognize this nastiness and refuse to compile it <grin> Jon Paris +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
