Pat,
  I *think* that a prior generation of terminals had a setting in the setup 
that you could toggle to attempt to alleviate the jitters.  Check the 
appendices of the 3487 manual (troubleshooting?) to see if theere's a 
setting for those machines.  A call to your CE might prove fruitful, too...
