There are multiple ways of doing this. I am going to assume that you are really new to the AS/400 so I'll start with some basics. First, what version of the Operating System are you running? One way to tell is to type in the command DSPPTF. The version of the OS will be at the top of the screen. Do you have Client Access or PC Support loaded on your system? To check use the command DSPSFWRSC. The resource ID will begin with four numbers and then two letters, then a number. For example 5763XD1. Look for stuff that has an X in position 5. Do you have TCP/IP loaded on your system? To check use the command DSPSFWRSC and look for a resource ID that begins with four numbers and ends with TC1. Do you want to do this remote or local? What kind of connectivity do you have on your AS/400? Do you have Twinax? Do you have Token Ring? Do you have Ethernet? Do you have an ASCII workstation controller? To check for Ethernet or Token Ring use the command WRKHDWRSC *CMN To check for twinax use the command WRKHDWRSC *LWS Tell us the numbers appearing after the indented resource. Normally 6141 means ASCII and the rest will be twinax. Client access, or the old PC Support, has some nice download capabilities that will format the data in a number of different methods, making it easy to import into many popular PC programs. TCP/IP is really popular, however you may have to jump through some hoops to break the fields apart. Keep hammering away, we'll have fun! And, if I can, is there software available to allow us to read the data files and convert them to ASCII?
