You can pick your choice of runtime enviroments  Win95/98/NT or Java.   I
think you 
can even pick Win3.11

VA/RPG  - It ain't going away.   All the things that Hans/Barb are saying 
that are comming to RPGIV will automatically (Same release)  be in VA/RPG.

It's an easy transition from RPGIV,    You learn  GUI/Event driven paradigm,

Some of the important things to be learned to move to OOP  and/or Java.     

And you still use a scripting language (RPGIV) that you already know !
You can Read/Chain etc to files on the AS/400 AND call programs
that are regular RPG programs on the AS/400 (Non-dspf batch type programs).

I recommend you'll  check it out.
