Dan, a couple of comments:

1-Why not show them a default date instead of blanks, which is probably
always wrong.   Put in to day's date, the end of last month or year, the
due date, or whatever date was in the field last time they were there.  
That shows them what is expected, if nothing else.

2-If that doesn't work, what is wrong with 00/00/0000?  

3- How on earth did you get away with a 4-digit year?  I am surprised the
users and their capos didn't come after you with sharpened coffee stirrers
and soggy toilet paper.  I tried YYYY once; it was not a pretty scene.
