We like ours fairly well.  Reliability seems to be pretty decent, although we
have had a slightly higher occurence of 'vacuum' lost types of errors than
before but not anything to critical.  Performance is decent also.  I am assuming
that this is a 3570B model as opposed to a 3570C........that has an impact on
performance and future flexibility.

The viability of a tape drive is dependent on your base system, your IOP, your
tape drive, and your environment.  Things like processor speed, IOP speed,
compaction, bus location, optimal blocking, and save types will really have an
impact on the performance of your saves.

We use a 3570C attached to a 2809 (combined function IOP).  Our saves are
typically DB2 files of a decent size.  First chance I get I will attach this in
the future on a 6534 on a bus other than 0.  We made a change on a 3590 and
moved it from bus 0 to bus 1 and gained a 30% time improvement on our daily
application saves.

As far as the 3570C is concerned their is a current announcement (199-219) that
talks about an upgrade to increase the capacity.  For $700 and new cartridges
($$) you can get a 40% increase in the capacity.

I have the opportunity to buy a used 3570 stand alone 2-drive tape
subsystem qualified for IBM maint.

Those of you with experience on these, how are they?  Reliable?
Speedy?  Does the offline tape-to-tape copy work well?

This would really be a step up from our 8mm.
