As it is pointed out, you should be able to use most of the FrontPage
features without relying on the extensions.  For features that require
extensions, such as building forms, perhaps these programmers could look to
other tools; most of the alternatives will have better solutions than
FrontPage.

FYI, I would highly recommend moving to FrontPage 2000.  Previous versions
of FrontPage had a nasty habit of reformatting (and often ruining)  HTML and
code that you imported from outside of it.  We're not surprised that
Microsoft would allow this.  Fortunately, some competition and many
complaints have led to the ability to disable this feature in FrontPage
2000.  It will allow you to more easily use many other Web development tools
in conjunction with FrontPage.

Do you really want the Frontpage extensions on your server?  They have been
the single greatest exposure to hackers on the UNIX and NT systems on the
Net.  Partially due to poor administration by the victum of these hacks,
partially by Microsoft bugs.  I use Frontpage 98, Dreamweaver, and Net.Data
extensively to develop my sites. I can't use all the feature of Frontpage,
but enough to make it worth while.

There is some discussion at IBM of supporting Frontpage 2000 which uses an
entirely new interface which obsoletes the old FrontPage extensions.  As far
as APACHE (look at their site, it means "A PATCHY Server"), it no longer
comes close to the IBM HTTP Server in terms of features and functionality!

Want to talk about tools like the Frontpage Extensions and security?  Visit
http://www.cert.org and look through their archives.  If anyone ever talks
about leaving the AS/400 for web serving and go to NT or UNIX, just visit
CERT and print a few hundered of the known security exposures for UNIX and
NT servers.

Heresy, I know.  However, the users still insist on publishing via
FrontPage.  Are you saying the mighty AS/400 isn't up the the Linux / Apache
challenge?  Hmmm.

I'm also very curious about this.

The folks that maintain the web pages want to continue to use FrontPage, and
I want to have the pages served by the AS/400.

Can the front page extensions be installed on to the AS/400 web server?

Further, much of the page data needs to be served via SSL.  Can this be done
on the 400?  How hard is it to do?
