From what I could glean from the sales manual, it appears that you might
have to: here is what the manual says,

The Overlay Utility has the following functions:

Create, copy, rename, delete, display description, and change the
description of source overlay
     files.

Create, change, copy, rename, delete, and print specifications for
source overlays.

Place text, lines, boxes, shading, bar codes, graphics, and page
segments at any defined point in
the printable area of the page. Placement can be specified in rows
and columns (in terms of
lines-per-inch and character-per-inch), centimeters, and inches.

Define vertical and horizontal lines: Lines can be solid, dashed,
or dotted with a specified thickness.

Define boxes: Boxes can have solid, dashed, or dotted lines with a
specified thickness. Box areas
can be shaded with a specified shade pattern and type. Text
specified within a box can be aligned
     within the box.

Define text in four orientations (0, 90, 180, and 270 degree) in
relation to the overlay and three
formats in which the text is written (horizontal, vertical,
vertical with right to left). The size of
character can be specified in height and width to enlarge or shrink
the characters. Underscoring
and overstriking with characters can be specified, but in that
case, the generated overlay has the
PT2 text, and therefore, is NOT interchangeable with other SAA
environments for printing.

Define bar codes: Twelve different bar codes types (Code 3 of 9,
Interleave 2/5, MSI Plessey,
     Industrial 2/5, Matrix 2 of 5, Codabar, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8,
EAN-13, PostNET, Code128) can
be specified with or without the Human Readable Information (HRI),
HRI font, and HRI asterisk.
The height of bar code elements and width of module can be
specified in either inches or
centimeters. The wide to narrow ratio can also be specified. Bar
codes can be placed in four
orientations (0, 90, 180, and 270 degree) in relation to the
overlay.

Although I could swear that you could do some boxes using regular old
DDS....
